Anti-Lynas rally in Bukit Merah on April 28

(Malaysiakini) Perak anti-Lynas activists will hold a rally on April 28 in Bukit Merah, in solidarity with the Himpunan Hijau march scheduled for the same day in Kuala Lumpur.

State anti-Lynas committee deputy head Hon Eng Kee said this is to provide people in the state to show their support for the cause, if they are unable to join the rally in Kuala Lumpur.

"And Bukit Merah is a very suitable place for us to (speak up) against Lynas because it was the site of the Asian Rare Earth (ARE) plant," he said.

The ARE plant was shut down in 1994, following which a major clean-up operation had to be undertaken, because of worries over the unnaturally high leukaemia rate in Bukit Merah.

Hon said participants will raise green flags during the rally, to express their resolve to defend the environment.

"We are also asking participants to bring their own green umbrella, and we will stamp the anti-lynas logo on it," he said.

Himpunan Hijau has announced that it will march from KLCC in protest of the Lynas rare earths refinery in Pahang.

They will then join the Bersih 3.0 sit-in protest from 2pm at Dataran Merdeka, which is pressing for clean and fair elections.

Hon said the Bukit Merah "satellite rally" is intended to support Himpunan Hijau, while voicing solidarity with calls for electoral reform.
