Sahabat Alam Malaysia says the Perak government is not stopping logging operations and no effort has been made to protect the state's forest reserves.

GEORGE TOWN: Forest reserves, wild life reserves and other reserves are being exploited by loggers and the Perak state government is not doing anything to stop it.

Sahabat Alam Malaysia (SAM) accused the state government of not upholding its own policy to protect the forests, including state-land forests covering some 40,000ha areas across the state.

SAM president SM Mohamed Idris said: " Perak has a long history of blatantly violating its forest and environmental laws and policies".

Mohamaed Idris urged the Perak government to resolve issues raised by the Auditor General in his 2008 report on the encroachment and exploitation of permanent reserved forest, wildlife reserves and other reserves in Perak.

The areas were Manjung district's Tanjung Burong forest reserve, Batang Padang's Gunung Besout and Chikus forest reserves, Sungai Siput sub-district's Chior wildlife reserve and Kerian district's Bukit Merah Lake reserve.

The AG report also revealed the state government plans to re-gazette part of degazetted permanent reserved forest in Perak Tengah district's of Parit and Manjung's Teluk Muroh forest reserves.

The report also highlighted destruction and reclamation of coastal mangrove and river reserves (riparian).

Mohamed Idris said the state government must be truly committed to managing the forests in accordance with the state's sustainable management policy.

Perak forests are governed by by the National Forestry Act (NFA) 1984 Enactment Adoption 1985.

Logging activities

Currently, Mohamed Idris said, Belum state park and Temenggor forest reserve in Hulu Perak were being massively encroached and exploited with logging activities, which can only be carried out in sensitivity Level 3 forest areas.

Mohamed Idris rapped the Perak government for not protecting the crucial forest reserves, which were legally classified as environmentally sensitive areas compromising three categories of heritage value, hazard risk, life support and sensitivity Levels 1 and 2.

Level 1 forest areas shall remain untouched virgin jungles while Level 2 areas can only have eco-tourism development.

Both protected forest areas are part of the Wildlife Corridor, Central Forest Spine and Titiwangsa Range that are all rich with biological diversity.

Mohamed Idris pointed out that the state government had promised that it would stop logging activities in Belum state park and Temenggor Forest Reserve from 2007.

However, he said until today the state government had not regazetted the forest areas to stop logging activities.

He called on the Menteri Besar Zambry Abd Kadir administration to stop the logging activities.

He said SAM does not refute the economic importance of logging to Perak.

"But the state government decision-makers should adhere to existing policies and physical plans to minimize impacts to the environment and public," stressed Mohamed Idris.
