Committee stage protest against Lynas rare earth project - BaikBike ...

BUKIT Merah residents have not forgotten the painful legacy of leukaemia, birth defect and brain tumour left behind by the Asian Rare Earth (ARE) incident as they took to the streets, protesting against the controversial rare earth project in Pahang by Lynas Advanced Materials Plant (LAMP).

Together with Ipoh folk, the protesters gathered near the former ARE plant site next to Jalan Lahat at 11am, sporting green shirts, flags, banners and posters on the issue.

The protest was organised by the Perak Anti Radioactive Action Committee (Parac) and the turnout were of multi-ethnic background and the young and old.

Bukit Merah resident Phang Thin Yan, 57, said the residents supported the protests whole-heartedly as they did not want to see the same tragedy repeating.

"It was terrible to live in fear of my children suffering from radioactive poisoning, developing tumours or leukaemia during the factory's operation. I do not want that happening to any other parents," he said.

Although his children were not affected and the factory finally shut down in 1994, Phang had seen other residents born with birth defects and stricken with leukaemia.

Bicycle shop owner Vincent Hoo, 30, who has a shop in Menglembu, gathered his cycling friends in support of the protests and promote environmental awareness at the same time.

"I initiated the idea and invited close to 20 friends who cycle regularly with me to join in the support today as we cycled from Ipoh to Pusing and then to Bukit Merah, covering up to 30km," he said.

In his speech, Parac chairman Hew Yong Tat said the protest was aimed at creating awareness on the issue and to remind Malaysians of the Bukit Merah ARE incident.

"We were victims of the past tragedy and know fully well of the consequences. We do not want a repeat of this tragedy," he said.

Protesters shouted "Stop Lynas, Save Malaysia" and motorists honked in support.

Four policemen were seen ensuring protesters did not block traffic. No arrests were made.

Among those present were Menglembu assemblyman Lim Pek Har, Batu Gajah MP Fong Po Kuan, Sungai Siput MP Dr D. Michael Jeyakumar, Tebing Tinggi assemblyman Ong Boon Piow and Gopeng MP Dr Lee Boon Chye.

The crowd dispersed at 12.10pm.
