The government has no intention on increasing the storage space for radioactive waste from the Bukit Merah rare earth plant.

KUALA LUMPUR: There are no plans to expand the dumping grounds for radioactive waste from the closed down Bukit Merah Asian Rare Earth plant.

This was the response from the government to Batu Gajah MP Fong Po Kuan's query on the dissolution and disposal progress involving radioactive waste from the ARE plant.

In a written response to Parliament, the Science, Technology and Innovations Ministry said there were no plans to increase the dump sites.

Minister Maximus Ongkili said that the Atomic Energy Licensing Board (AELB) had no plans to increase disposal space for the radioactive waste.

On another note, Ongkili said that any planned development in the vicinity of the disposal site had to be considered by the AELB.

"Any development, for instance, recreational grounds in the 1.7-kilometre contol zone from the disposal site can still be considered, given the AELB's and the Perak state government's requirements and approval," Ongkili said.

Mitsubishi Chemical's rare earth plant was closed in 1992 after years of protests from Bukit Merah residents. The company is still carrying out a MR303 million clean-up operation in the area.

Since then, Bukit Merah residents have blamed the rare earth plant for birth defects and leukemia cases in the community.

Despite the wide-scale opposition against rare earth plants, the Perak state government planned in April for the building of a brand new plant.
